The Gold of Mauritius

Born on the Indian Ocean beaches, Beach House Spiced is a spiced rum in endearing style. Its first originality is to be developed with an excellent molasses based rum from Mauritius, land known to offer its rums naturally peppery and with spicy tones. This makes it the ideal base for creating a spiced rum in which all the ingredients are naturally harmonious.

Beach House Gold Spiced Rum is a beautiful golden rum that showcases the beautiful pepper character of molasses rum from Mauritius.
It’s colour is described as warm gold with copper highlights. The nose is complex, dominated by scents of sanguine orange, candied ginger, honey and blond tobacco. After aeration, the scents of gingerbread, cinnamon bark and citrus zest appear with an elegant power. The palate is particularly smooth, suave, and delicately tangy. The spices are revealed, successively marrying happiness the flavors of orange and mandarin and the finish is long and delicious with warm and peppery accents.

Rum production has only really taken off in production in Mauritius in the last few years. Why is this? Well, to understand that, as is always the way with spirits, we need to learn a little bit of the history. I hope you’re sitting comfortably.

The island of Mauritius had apparently been unpopulated until the Dutch settled there in 1638. They named the island after their ruler, Prince Maurice Van Nassau. During their time in the colony, they introduced deer and sugar cane to the island. However, they abandoned it in 1710. Then the French arrived. They were looking to settle on the island, bringing more sugar cane. They were more successful at colonising, and as a result French is still commonly spoken on the island, more so than British. A century or so down the line, after the Napoleonic war, Britain took the island under their control, and with that more sugarcane was planted, that’s a lot of sugar cane, right? Using the labor of slaves, the British were able to grow sugar cane production into a profitable industry. Once slavery was abolished, the labour largely came from India, and as a result today half the island is of Indian descent.

Sugar cane production carried on over many years, and yet the island didn’t really make rum. It was more profitable and reliable to produce sugar than rum. Plus, sugar was a massive industry for the British Empire, so that remained the focus of their efforts. To protect their crops there was a ban on rum production which was eventually lifted in 2006. As a result, islanders have started making their own agricole, which is rum made from sugar cane juice, and used as the base of Arcane Extraroma, which is included in this months Craft Rum Box. However, molasses based rum is also being made and this is the base for Beach House Gold Spiced Rum.

What are the differences between these two types of rum? Well, you’ll need to check out the article on Arcane Extraroma to find out!
